According to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the total utilisable land area currently under organic production in Ireland is 1%. It is part of the Programme for Government to increase this to 5% by 2012. The Department also estimate that retail value of total organic food (including fruit and vegetables) will rise from a value of 66m euros in 2006 to 400m euros in 2012. The majority of organic food in Ireland has to be imported.
